Richard Koegl studied Television and Film in his native Toronto
and soon after embarked upon a career in classical music, studying
in Paris, which opened up the sensual world like never before.
Learning that art, music and literature are a cohesive unit of
understanding ancient and modern day civilization, he worked as
a photographer and tour guide on cultural trips in Europe and
around the world to better understand the delicate balance and
fragile world in which we live. Since then, Richard has
become one of the most widely sought after experts on comparative
cultural and educational travel, and has become renowned for his
work as a travel photographer – shooting for tour operators,
travel magazines and America’s leading cultural, educational
and scientific agencies. More often these shoots take Richard
to some of the world’s most remote regions.
Richard Koegl’s photographs are recognized for their composition,
unique perspective, and mastery of color. His vision is rooted
in the notion that photography deals with the passage of time,
places transformed by light – ordinary moments that are
captured in a stylistic framework. Richard’s photographic
mission is multi-faceted: by employing journalistic and
artistic styles, he documents his subjects and educates the viewer,
suggesting that we see the world in new and unique ways, away
from our preconceived notions of how things ‘should be’
seen and experienced. This unique approach lends itself
to his passionate and imaginative kaleidoscope of planetary adventure.
Recent photographic assignments have been with America’s
leading scientific, educational and cultural publications including
the Smithsonian Institution; Harvard, Yale and the University
of California Berkeley. His images have appeared in newspapers
and America’s leading travel brochures such as the Grand
Expedition family of travel companies: Country Walkers,
Park East Safaris, TCS Private Jet Expeditions and Travcoa.
Other work has been with Holland America Cruises, Travel Dynamics
International and Butterfield & Robinson. Richard’s
1998 solo exhibition entitled “AD 106: Photographs from
Petra & Palmyra” mapped the architectural and nomadic
legacies of two of the most prosperous trade cities during the
height of the Roman Empire. An exhibition entirely shot
in infra-red black & white, the haunting images remain some
of the most evocative in his portfolio.
Apart from shooting for tour operators, travel magazines and
America’s leading agencies, Richard also creates private
travel itineraries that he painstakingly custom crafts for clients
who desire a richer experience while traveling. Recent guests
have included Mr. David Rockefeller, Mr. & Mrs. Moshe Safdie,
and Mr. & Mrs. Robert Fromer. Richard is currently co-hosting
a new television travel series with renowned author Karen Armstrong.
The series explores comparative art, religion and culture in emerging
countries of the world. |
